The upcoming weeks are the busiest time of year for the publishing
industry and therefore, for Substance Books (see graph).
For the past 5 years Substance Books has been receiving record-breaking traffic, measured during this time of the year. This is partially thanks to our Holiday Book Giveaway project.
Who doesn't love a free book? We are ready as ever to take advantage of this shopping frenzy to promote our titles. If you wish to participate by
throwing your book into the giveaway goody-bag, read through the project details and don't delay in letting us know your interest.
Please note there is a deadline for participation, so contact us today to take advantage of this exciting project.
Project Objectives:
Using target-marketed exposure through an anticipated increase in traffic, based on site statistics from the same period last year.
To gain data collection of potentially interested book buyers for the titles in question.
Project objectives will be achieved by:
- "Free Books" slideshow on the Substance homepage for 2 months, from 1st of December 2009 until the 1st of February 2010.
- The "Free Books" slideshow will also be posted on video sharing networks, such as: Youtube.
- Search Engine Optimized exposure through our new Book Giveaway page featuring book covers, synopses, authors' photos, and press releases all linking directly to the sites of distributors or authors. This page will be active for 3 additional months.
- Exposure in online forums with mass-marketing potentials dedicated to free offers, contests and sweepstakes.
- A press release created by Substance Books announcing Holiday Book Giveaway. The press release will be distributed in Web 2.0 environments and social networking environments targeting the general reading public.
This project is based on a cooperative model and provides no profit to Substance Books. Our reward is the augmented traffic (thanks to your books) to the benefit of everyone.
- $250.00 USD (or Canadian + taxes).
- 3 copies of the title in question.
- 3 copies and corresponding shipping fees of the book in question.
Project Rules:
- Participation is based on first-come, first-served basis
- This project is only available to active Substance Books members (click to join)
- A maximum of 10 titles will be accepted
- One title per author
- Project fee, this must be received by Substance Books before the 27th November 2009.
Project Time Frame:
Participation / payment deadline: 27th of November 2009.
Project launch: 1st of December 2009.
Contest closure and notification of winners: 22nd of January 2010.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and Usability Tips for Authors Looking to Sell

With the Holiday book-buying season on our doorstep, online publicity efforts are more important then ever. A Search Engine Optimized Website will increase the number of target-marketed visitors / book buyers, enhancing the profitability of your Internet efforts. Due to the highly ephemeral nature of Search Engine Marketing, once your title is not within the TOP 10 listings of major Search Engines, your online exposure is essentially six feet under.
The following tips were prepared by Search Engine Optimization Specialist, Hajni Blasko, and are listed in order of priority.
- No SEO (Search Engine Optimization) cheats of any kind.
If your website's SEO campaign is handled by someone else it's still up to you to assure this rule applies. Feel free to search your favorite Search Engine to learn more about unethical "Black-hat" SEO techniques. - No Flash based intro. / splash homepages.
Flash content is still not indexed properly by Search Engines. Flash should only be used to enhance a site, as a visual element. If you are suspecting Flash content to be a factor in your site's low SERP (Search Engine Ranking Position), request a free evaluation of your site. - No .net, .org, no nonsense.
A .com site will bring you larger global exposure through Search Engines compared to the same site with any other suffix. - Great SERP (Search Engine Ranking Position) can only be achieved with Search Engine Optimized content.
Whether writing a novel or writing for Search Engines requires different skills and levels of experience. Hire a professional SEO copywriter, who knows how to balance writing for online readers, for sales and writing for engines. To ensure that your site is ranked higher in Search Engines, use the recommended range of 200 - 1500 words on your homepage. If you suspect this to be a factor in your site's low SERP (Search Engine Ranking Position), request a free SEO evaluation of your content. - Use good usability techniques otherwise your Search Engine Optimization efforts will be fruitless.
High usability level can transform unique visitors into actual book buyers. If you suspect usability to be a factor in your site's low SERP (Search Engine Ranking Position), request a free evaluation of your site. - Use PPC (Pay Per Click) or PI (Payed Inclusion) even if it is for a small amount.
- Be social and compound your publicity power.
Two hours a week of focused social networking can build a fanclub of readers who will further recommend your titles.
