Editor & Book Publicity Assistant

"I'm a freelance magazine writer, editor and translator. My work has appeared in the UC Observer magazine, the Quebec Chronicle-Telegraph and La Scena Musicale. I also freelance for Reader's Digest magazine as an editorial fact checker and researcher. My university degrees are in journalism, world religions and Icelandic literature.

Before I decided to work with words, my adventures ranged from cattle farming to teaching music. As a curious person, I love to travel, explore cities, meet new people and of course, read day and night. I'm very pleased to be joining the Substance Books team as the Literary Marketing Assistant. I'm looking forward to working with the authors and discovering some great new books to read."

"Faced with the question, "What do you want to do?" all I can say is "Keep learning. Keep creating. Keep discovering what I don't know." That's a risky answer, one which has sent me irredeemably on a course of living through the arts. A childhood love affair with reading - I was convinced I should have been born in Narnia - led to editorial work, a BFA in art history and studio art, a diploma in graphic design and an upcoming exhibition of paintings.

I'm continually amazed at how lucky I've been in the opportunities I've had to work and play alongside incredible artists of all stripes. The more creative people I meet, the more I believe in the power of artists working together to create something far beyond any one person's abilities. So send me your story. Tell me what inspired you and let's uncover a great future for your opus.

"When you grow up on a scrubby island at the bottom of the globe, the rest of the world sometimes seems so distant. All those other lives, in those faraway places, that can be lived out in books. It was a hunger for my own experiences and taller than true-life stories that led me for years through Asia, Europe and now, finally, to settle here in North America.

Even while collecting outlandish tales of my own, my love of the written word never once faltered. In fact, it paved the way, as a professional writer, a journalist, a broadcaster, a marketing and PR copywriter, and still does as a localization editor.

Each position is an important chapter in my overall story, because each setting pushes beyond geography, onto the razor's edge of journalistic ethics, into the frigid wilderness of business writing, adding to the overall experience.

In each I learned a thing or two about what works when it comes to communicating in changing cultural, business and even political environments. That means knowing that no two stories are the same, and having the skills to meet the needs of each.

And over the last decade I'm proud to say I've earned my editor's stripes and now as a member of the Substance Books team, I'm really getting my teeth into the business of literary publishing, publicity and marketing.

As you can see, it's always been a personal business for me, just as it is for you. I have a profound personal need for what we do here to be nothing short of excellent.

You've heard my story – now let's talk about your story and your specific requirements. Send me an email at publicist@substancebooks.com."
